Nancer Ballard

Night Visitor

Bless the boy who pads down the hall

to his parents’ room while they sleep

and stands counting their breath.

Bless the boy who climbs into bed

in the sliver of space near his mother’s head

leaving only his foot dangling over the edge.

Bless misfortune’s boy, stalked by a raccoon

that climbs through the screen and a door

then creeps up stairs to bite the boy

who sleeps.  Bless the bleeding boy.
